School Committee member Gerald O’Leary is arrested.

October 2, 1980

O’Leary and attorney Richard Mulhern are arrested minutes after accepting a $25,000 bribe for a school bus company in the Sheraton Boston Hotel. It is the second installment of a total of $650,000 that ARA Services had agreed to pay for being awarded a $40 million contract to provide school bus transportation for the Boston public schools in July 1980. O’Leary resigns from the committee two days later, subsequently pleads guilty to attempted extortion and conspiracy, and is sentenced to serve 18 months in the federal penitentiary on March 10, 1981.
